Project Overview

CBS Films wanted to raise awareness and drive traffic to the theater for one of their first feature-length productions: The Mechanic, starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster. We created an interactive, “impossible to miss” in-banner experience that gave users first-hand experience of the film. Our intriguing CTA set the stage for a page of exploding content, which kept viewers’ attention with action-packed clips. By giving the user a character’s POV, we were able to tease the film in a fun way, captivating potential fans and generating buzz before the premiere. The campaign exceeded client expectations with over half a million interactions and more than 120,000 trailer views, which helped drive ticket sales and support an impressive opening for the film.

Project Overview

WE tv was bringing a comedy icon, Joan Rivers, to their network and wanted to use Joan’s personality to help drive traffic to the newly revamped WEtv.com. We built a campaign around the the high-stress relationship exhibited between Joan and Melissa Rivers on the show. Joan Knows Best was an unprecedented ratings success, coming in second in its time slot of shows and setting a record as WE tv’s highest rated premiere ever. And our secondary goal of driving traffic site traffic was equally successful, giving WEtv.com its biggest day in history and topping the previous record by more than 20%.

Project Overview

We were tasked with promoting the release of CBS Films’ first action film, Faster. Honing in on action and adventure seeking males, we created a homepage takeover that would capture the attentions of this target demographic and drive them to the film. In other words, we simulated an up close and personal “drive-by” effect shooting. When the user lands on the page, five bullets fire in sequence, shattering the “glass overlay.” The unique, three-second takeover left users with a sense of action and intrigue, thus promoting the film despite it’s swift, “rapid fire” execution.

Project Overview

Big Ten Network came to us wanting a way to promote their new streaming service, BTN2Go, which delivers live and on-demand programming to existing BTN subscribers via the web, smart phones and tablets. Tapping into the die-hard mentality of Big Ten team fans, we leveraged digital, OOH and print media to communicate the portability of Big Ten programming through BTN2Go. Essentially, with this service you could take your favorite team with you “wherever, whenever” you go – a spectacular selling point for the uncompromising fans that make up the majority of Big Ten’s target demographic.

Here’s what they needed

The MTV Video Music Awards is one of MTV’s biggest events of the year. It’s an occasion where celebrities, musicians and pop culture icons come together for one night of headline-making hoopla, ridiculousness, and, let’s face it, making out. MTV wanted a way to amplify the hype, get fans’ attention and encourage engagement preceding the show in order to generate buzz and increase tune-in.

Here’s what we did

We decided the best solution to attract fans was to leverage the existing hype and chatter by feeding them the most up-to-date Video Music Awards relevant news. Using Twitter, we broadcast tweets from both the celeb attendees (who had already amassed huge online followings) and trending topics like #vmas and #bestvideo in real-time, aggregating the top four topics in a rich-media unit. Fans could then log into Twitter and retweet their favorites, influencing the Twitter standings. We called it the Twitter Tracker, as the banner would relay the most talked about celebs and categories, showcasing the most relevant Video Music Award-worthy news.

And here’s what happened

In just one day, the Twitter Tracker delivered over 12 million impressions, almost 200,000 interactions and a CTR of 1.7% – an astounding six times better than it did the previous year. In fact, fans spent almost 500 hours interacting with the unit during its 24-hour window, crushing the industry standard. With an interaction rate of 31x more than than the year before, the Twitter Tracker helped make the 2011 MTV VMAs the highest rated award show ever broadcast on the network.

Here’s what they needed

Sony wanted a way to launch its free streaming entertainment platform, Crackle, raising the brand’s profile and positioning it in a way that would differentiate it from competitors like Hulu and Netflix.

Here’s what we did

Our strategy was simple: acknowledge the fact that Crackle was an unknown, untapped and “too good to be true” destination for full-length movies. To do this, we declared Crackle “the best thing you never heard of,” and leveraged the tongue-in-cheek wordplay by hashtagging the line in an effort to get people talking and sharing. Unlike the brand’s competitors, Crackle was not afraid to poke fun of itself in the name of sharing – well, the best thing people had never heard of. In fact, one of the main components of the campaign was an interactive OOH execution in NY and LA. Passersby were encouraged to sign in to Twitter and tweet a message that included a pre-populated #bestthingyouneverheardof. In exchange for spreading the word, Tweeters were rewarded with boxes of movie candy. In addition to the interactive OOH, we also topped taxies, produced wallscapes, plastered billboards and created flash banner takeovers for sites like IMDb.com and IGN.com

And here’s what happened

The campaign met or exceeded all goals across the board. Unaided awareness increased by 200% and aided awareness doubled in just five months. Traffic spiked at the campaign launch, garnering 4.5MM+ direct visits, and continued through October. The interactive OOH installations generated 10,000+ interactions and contributed to 80,000+ “#BestThingYouNeverHeardOf” mentions in just three weeks; Crackle’s Facebook and twitter followers increased, +21% and +157%, respectively, without a paid Facebook presence. “#BestThingYouNeverHeardOf” and a promoted tweet garnered a 5.07% engagement rate, 2% higher than twitter’s benchmark. Finally, we succeeded ranking as the #2 mobile app on iTunes charts.

The digital pen “uses ultrasonic and infrared technologies” along with 1024 levels of pressure, enabling the transfer of drawings/designs/doodles from paper to computer via USB.

Though several “ink-to-digital” pens already exist, it’s the pressure sensitivity that puts the Inkling leaps and bounds beyond the rest.

And with an affordable $200 price tag, looks like Marc will be first in line at Apple when they’re released come mid September. One for everyone at Maude, right Marc?

(I expect $20 from each of you for that.)

Wishful thinking? Only time will tell. In the meantime, check out the video.*

*Warning: unless you enjoy subjecting your ears to elevator music on crack synthesized with electric oboe and cockroaches prancing on a sitar – hit mute.

Blame the summer. Blame the heat. Blame Tony’s neon tank tops in all their blinding inter-office glory.

And now that the heat has subsided a bit and Tony is back to wearing mute-hued shirts with sleeves, it’s time to get back to business.

Yesterday, Puneet sent me this link about a Flashkus, a disposable USB made from paper. While the Russian design studio Art. Lebedev revealed the concept back in February and it seems the disk is still in development (aka not yet available for purchase), it’s a prett-y sweet idea that could transform the way we ideate everything from print to direct mail to business cards.

Check it out here.

Intrigued (and quite frankly, because Chris told me to), I spent my morning coffee break reviewing the list, ready to be “wowed.” While some, including The Talking Ad, The Solar-Powered Ad and The Test-Drive Ad left me cursing the creative who gave birth to such genius ideation, some other left me asking (pardon my French) wtf?

While Volkswagon’s Edible Ad is a fantastic idea in theory, an insert made from propylene glycol and glycerine is not going to whet my taste buds – nor my brand loyalty.

And to The Sunbather’s Ad, I’d like think of something clever to say but I’m too busy googling melanoma.

The article closes with The Sticky Ad, a rather crude case for an Australian fertility clinic in which glue acts as – well, just see for yourself. (Though let me just say, while I cringed as I read it, the agency certainly deserves an A for strategic placement.)

Curious? Check it out here:

and the bio is king, says Michael Margolis, Dean of Story University and host of the Reinvention Summit. After reading his article, I admit, I absolutely agree. Particularly with his positioning on the personal branding brouhaha, which he calls “a bunch of buzzword bingo bullshit.” #alliterationisawesome

I’ve always considered the process of constructing a persona which you can then sell and “market” to employers contrived, and more importantly, misleading. If you’ve created a facade, sooner or later, people will find out. And if you’re really that great, why waste your time with various stunts and matching business cards/portfolios/candy bars/whatever-you-can-put-your-name-on that you’ll distribute to creative directors, hoping to differentiate yourself from the rest?

Instead, says Margolis, forgo the “b.s.” and focus on your bio, your story.

Check out his article. You may not agree but to me, reading about someone’s life journey is a hell of a lot more intriguing than a chocolate bar dubiously hand-wrapped in purple paper (read: “branded”) by someone I’ve never met. Just saying.

Users will be able to select live events as they happen from a menu, add events to their calendar and subscribe to channels to find out when content from their favorite creators will be streaming. As an added bonus, they’ll be able to interact with select live events by typing questions or commands.

Initially, this will be offered to content creators with whom YouTube has a good relationship, but presumably all creators in good standing will eventually be able to stream content live.

Needless to say, this is an incredible opportunity for marketers. In the entertainment category, YouTube Live could enable real-time interaction with characters from movies and TV shows. It makes the DVD commentary both instant and interactive. You’ll not only be able to ask the star of your favorite reality show what they were thinking when they yanked out that weave, but you could ask show runners where the season is going and what they were thinking when they let those two characters get together. It’s also a great medium for getting the most out of publicity events: not everyone can make it to the bookstore to get their copy of “I was a Teenage Werewolf” signed, but now viewers can get up close and personal with their favorite stars without having to get off the couch.

There’s also enormous potential for newly launched products, particularly those that require consumer education. How cool would it be to interact live with the people who developed your new cell phone, and ask them questions about how it works and why they designed it a certain way?

In the somewhat more distant future, we foresee an even deeper level of interaction in which viewers can use webcams to interact live with each other within curated YouTube Live environments: for instance, Drew Carey may host live improvathons that include members of his remote audience, Mac and PC enthusiasts could battle it out in realtime, or Twilight fans could offer Bella the best advice to protect her heart – and humanity at large.

It’s an exciting new way to give creators and their audience direct access to one another, and we can’t wait to try it out.

It’s consistently inventive, laugh-out-loud funny and full of heart.

This interview with showrunner Dan Harmon goes a long way towards explaining why. He’s committed to the story and the character, he listens to his fans and he’s a fan himself.

What’s striking is how amenable his philosophy for making an awesome show is to the idea of making great advertising. Or maybe not. There’s a certain continuity between creative pursuits. Whether it’s advertising, TV or ice sculpture, creativity is about eliciting an emotional response in an audience that will provoke an action. Harmon’s point about the “Jack and the Beanstalk” approach is right on. You never know where a good idea will come from, and you usually have to follow a bad idea all the way to the end before it eventually surrenders and gives you a hint on where to find a good idea (For an agency named after an old broad, it should make sense that we’re into personification).

Everything that he says, in fact, can be applied equally to a brand. Have something to say. Find out what makes your message special. Build a team of people who care about that message and will be smart about creating new ways to tell the brand’s story. Play well with others. Listen to your audience.

And, of course, the most important lesson we can learn from Dan Harmon also is the simplest: watch Community.

Here’s what they needed

MTV wanted an unconventional way to promote a very unconventional show about four Canadian millennials on a journey across America to check off all of the things they wanted to do before they die.

Here’s what we did

We decided that the best way to get viewers interacting with the stars of the show was to ask them the same question: What do you want to do before you die? We created an interactive storefront on the corner of New York’s Fifth Avenue and 43rd Street printed with promotional shots from the show and the show’s question. Touchscreen interfaces let users watch clips from the show and enter their own answer, which they could then post in their Facebook newsfeed. All user submissions were synced across banner ads, onto the show’s homepage and in a scrolling list at the storefront.

And here’s what happened

The campaign achieved an astounding 14,572 video plays and collected 5079 entries to its scrolling list. A total of 117 entries were also submitted to users’ Facebook Newsfeeds – even more impressive since this was not a format users were accustomed to using to access their social media accounts – and we generated a remarkable amount of attention for our unprecedented storefront execution, which went on to win a Buzz Award.

Project Overview

For the return of the hard-hitting Sons of Anarchy, FX wanted to highlight the give-em-hell attitude of a violent, drug-running biker gang. We created an aggressive, page takeover that begins from a 300×250 and eventually sets the whole page on fire. Along with other ads that showed some of the ballsier clips from the show, it set the tone for a season full of brawling, boozing and – well – Anarchy.

Here’s what they needed

Awards shows follow a pretty standard script, and MTV’s viewers are nothing if not restless. MTV needed a way to give their audience a reason to get excited about the latest incarnation of the MTV Movie Awards.

Here’s what we did

We decided that the best way to help the MTV Movie Awards stand out was to get the viewers involved in the process, so we created a multi-functional rich media widget that fit in a standard 300×250 ad unit. After leading off with a promo video, we gave users a variety of tabs that offered the chance to vote for winners, access Twitter and RSS feeds about the show and the stars who were going to be on it, watch video clips and more. Users could even click to embed the widget on their own social media pages.

And here’s what happened

Users loved the functionality our widget presented. In a single flight, we produced more than 7 million video views, and 3308 votes for winners with an average user interaction time of an astounding 77 seconds. The widget was ultimately recognized as a finalist in the Online Advertising Creativity category for the 2010 OMMA Awards, and it was the key driver in a remarkably successful digital campaign. The total click through rate was .83%, which surpasses the industry average by almost 5 times, and the 2010 CTR even passed the previous year’s Movie Awards CTR by an astonishing 655%.

Project Overview

For the sixth season of its popular comedy, FX wanted to bring out some of the attitude and fun of the show into the digital space. Starting from the characters, our campaign used high-profile executions and engaging interactive opportunities to let viewers hang out with the whole gang. Innovative page takeovers showed beer filling up various sites’ content before the characters drank it back down, while rich media units allowed our audience to insert themselves into the show’s key art to become part of the gang and share it with their friends.

Project Overview

truTV was launching a new law enforcement reality show that changes the perspective on the whole genre. Police POV is shot with micro-cameras that sit behind the ears of real cops to catch every second of the action as seen through the eyes of the cops. Our campaign put the focus on the game-changing technology, with ads featuring close-ups of cops wearing the camera. At the same time, we drove home the visceral benefits with high-impact digital placements that reminded consumers that this is the only cop show that truly lets them see the cops’ perspective.

Project Overview

Mark Hoppus, bass player for the pop-punk band Blink-182, is a recognizable face to music fans, but he was about to move to a new role: host of Fuse’s weekly music show, A Different Spin. We developed a campaign to to introduce Mark to the television audience by leveraging his irreverent attitude and playing up his inexperience in the world of music news. He practiced his interview techniques in one online video while display ads made him a hero for the underqualified. Strategically-placed synched ads showed him struggling to work out the kinks at his new gig and helped to set the stage for a brand-new music show that’s anything by ordinary.
